O Solitude (My Sweetest Choice)

O Solitude reflects on the solitude that many artists prefer; fostering their creativity and introspection in a state of being alone. Unlike loneliness, which is involuntary and painful, solitude is a deliberately chosen and productive space in which artists can cultivate their inner voice and take risks.

O Solitude (My Sweetest Choice)
During this process, they may engage in ‘incubation’, the partly subconscious process of developing ideas. In a world that often glorifies busyness and social interaction, temporary isolation can lead to a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. The exhibition title is taken from O Solitude, My Sweetest Choice: the Baroque masterpiece by Henry Purcell from 1685 that praises withdrawal from the hectic pace of daily life as a bittersweet blend of melancholy and reflection.

The exhibition O Solitude (My Sweetest Choice) is part of the artist in residence period of artist Folkert de Jong, who worked amid the third- and fourth- year students of HKU Fine Art. De Jong created this expo in partnership with nine students in their graduation year.
