New AIR Pastoe: Folkert de Jong

  • 29 september 2025

Folkert de Jong is the new resident of the AIR Pastoe programme for 2025–2026. Starting in December, Folkert will spend five months working in the AIR Pastoe studio, among the third- and fourth-year Fine Art students at HKU.

New AIR Pastoe: Folkert de Jong

The sculptor and draughtsman, based in Amsterdam, is widely known for his monumental sculptures made of styrofoam and polyurethane foam—materials usually associated with insulation. His life-sized, colourful works are inspired by significant events in (art) history. He exhibits both nationally and internationally.

A new dimension

According to the HKU Fine Art team, he is exactly the kind of resident they were looking for: 'While previous residents primarily worked with two-dimensional media, Folkert introduces a new dimension: he works from a distinctly sculptural practice, opening up fresh perspectives for students on how to transform materials and ideas into adventurous forms.'

In addition, he is internationally active, with an extensive network and a dynamic practice of collaborations and exhibitions across the globe. This gives students insight into the art world beyond the Netherlands, as well as opportunities to learn from his experience in building and sustaining such a network.'

Exchange

For De Jong, the real value lies in connecting with students: it gives him the chance to test ideas, experiment with new materials, and embark on larger collaborative projects. This exchange challenges and inspires both him and our students.

De Jong: 'The invitation to become the new resident came at a perfect moment. This year, I’ve been working more with young artists, and I really enjoyed that exchange. I find it fascinating to see how young artists respond to the times we live in.'

About Folkert de Jong

Folkert de Jong studied at the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (1996) and at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (2000), both in Amsterdam. In 2003, he won the Prix de Rome. His work has been shown at Peres Projects (Los Angeles), Upstream Gallery (Amsterdam), Galerie Fons Welters (Amsterdam), De Vleeshal (Middelburg), and SMBA (Amsterdam).
