General enrolment requirements

On this page you find information on language requirements, necesssary documents and visa.

If HKU requires additional documents, you will be notified about this after you have been admitted. With the help of the verification wizard below you can already see which documents we need from you. The documents relate to proof of identity, language requirement and previous education. The deadline for submitting your documents is 1 June prior to the academic year you want to start your course at HKU.

Necessary documents

  • If your identity has not been verified by the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), please upload a copy of your passport or identity card. Make sure you upload both front and back of your identity card. Note: your identity document must be valid on 1 September of the year you start studying.

  • All courses at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht are taught in Dutch, unless otherwise indicated. Students who have had their prior education outside The Netherlands or Flanders, must comply with the language requirement.

    Bachelor courses and Associate Degrees

    Dutch language proficiency
    NT2 - program 2 / CNaVT - profile 'Educatief Professioneel' - ERK C1 (formerly known as PAT) or profiel 'Educatief Startbekwaam' - ERK B2 (formerly known as PTHO).

    English language proficiency is possible for:

    • Bachelor of Fine Art

    The minimum score should be:
    IELTS 6 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 550 / TOEFL Computer: 213 / TOEFL Internet: 80 / TOEIC: Listening & Reading 670 + Speaking & Writing 290 / Cambridge Esol: CAE en CPE

    • Bachelor of Music at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

    The minimum score should be:
    IELTS: 5.5 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 525/ TOEFL Computer: 196/ TOEFL Internet: 70, TOEIC: Listening & Reading 620 + Speaking & Writing 260, Cambridge Esol: CAE en CPE

    Master courses

    Dutch language proficiency is possible for:

    • Master Interior Architecture
    • Master Crossover Creativity
    • Master of Music, pathway Music Design
    • Master of Music, pathway Performance
    • Master of Arts in Education

    Preparatory courses and Pre-masters

    Dutch language proficiency
    NT2 - programma 1 / CNaVT - profile 'Educatief Professioneel' - ERK C1 (formerly known as PAT) or profiel 'Educatief Startbekwaam' - ERK B2 (formerly known as PTHO).

    English language proficiency is possible for:

    • Preparatory Course HKU Utrechts Conservatorium
    • Pre-master at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

    The minimum score should be
    IELTS: 5 (academic level) / TOEFL Paper: 500 / TOEFL Internet: 60 / TOEIC: Listening & Reading 620 + Speaking & Writing 260 / Cambridge Esol: CAE en CPE

    Exemption Dutch language requirement

    If your training was clearly in Dutch, you can apply for an exemption from the Dutch language requirement. HKU will evaluate if you qualify for an exemption based on a certified copy of your diploma and transcript. It is possible HKU requests additional documentation from you.

    Exemption English language requirement

    If your training was clearly in English, you can apply for an exemption from the English language requirement. HKU will evaluate if you qualify for an exemption based on a certified copy of your diploma and transcript. It is possible HKU requests additional documentation from you.

    HKU can grant students an exemption from the English language test based on a diploma achieved in some countries in Europe. Download the complete list of countries and diplomas to check to which countries and diplomas an exemption applies.

    NT2 language test

    Please visit the website Staatsexamen NT2 to find more information about the NT2 Dutch Language test.

    Be aware! Plan your language test in time. It may take some time before you can take the test and before the results are known.

    IELTS and TOEFL

    You can find more information about the English language tests on www.toefl.org and www.ielts.org.

  • If your prior education has not been verified by DUO, please upload a copy of your HAVO, VWO or MBO level 4 diploma or foreign equivalent together with a list of grades or a copy of your certificate of a university or university of applied sciences including a list of grades.

    If you applied for the Master of Music course at HKU Utrechts Conservatorium, you have to upload a Bachelor of Music diploma or similar certificate.

    Spanish diploma:
    If you have completed your previous education in Spain, but you are not yet in possession of your official diploma, submit the following 3 documents:

    1: An official list of marks (signed / stamped by the school).
    2: A statement from the institution where you obtained your degree. This dated and certified statement must state that you have passed, for which degree and direction, what the official graduation date is and that the diploma will be awarded later.
    3: Proof of payment for the application for your diploma.

    Document languages

    HKU only accepts documents in one of the following languages: Dutch, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Afrikaan or French.

    Translation

    When your diploma is not in one of the languages above, you must have your documents translated by an official translator or the institution at which the certificate was achieved. HKU needs both the copy of the diploma and the translation. Please upload both.

    HKU reserves the right to ask you for the original documents for the purpose of verification. Please make sure you have access to them.

Upload documents

If HKU needs additional documents, you will receive an email. In this email you find a link to the upload page and your login information. Please do not email your documents or send them by post to HKU. Wait for the message with upload details. Also check your spam folder regularly.

Residence permit

If you have a non-EEA nationality you can only be enrolled if you maintain legal residence in The Netherlands for the duration of your study. You must make sure that HKU has a copy of your valid residence permit (VVR).
