HKU Utrechts Conservatorium celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. That means 150 years of music in the city, 150 generations of alumni performing their music throughout Utrecht and beyond. We will be celebrating this from the end of November to the end of June with a festive anniversary programme throughout the city of Utrecht.
We kick off with an opening concert on Friday 28 November in Fentener van Vlissigenzaal, Mariaplaats 27. The opening concert will be performed by the HKU Large Ensemble under the musical direction of former Composer of the Netherlands Martin Fondse. The HKU Large Ensemble, consisting of more than 60 musicians, includes wind and string players, singers, and a rhythm section from the Jazz & Pop and Classical Music departments. Two alumni will also be performing: saxophonist Kika Sprangers and vocalist Marit van der Lei. The repertoire includes a selection of compositions by Martin Fondse.
In addition to music, the opening of our anniversary celebrations will also focus on the role and significance of 150 years of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. Various musicians who are or have been involved with HKU Utrechts Conservatorium will briefly discuss this topic.
The Future is Now!
A suite written for a unique ensemble of big band, symphony orchestra and a 23-member choir, featuring students from the Jazz & Pop and Classical Music departments. ‘The future is the continuation of the present’: 150 years of history played by the HKU musicians of today and tomorrow.
With visions of the future such as Robot Taxi and Absolution, the story of A Rosa – an unfortunate rose growing on a barren cliff – a story about survival, and Some Final Words, based on the last words of famous people; from hopeful and memorable to hilarious and trivial.
