Anniversary 150 years HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

The 2025/26 academic year will be a festive one, as HKU Utrecht Conservatory will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. We will be celebrating this milestone from the end of November 2025 through June 2026 with a festive anniversary programme for the entire city of Utrecht.

Anniversary 150 years HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

150 years of HKU Utrecht Conservatoire means 150 years of music in the city, 150 generations of alumni performing their music throughout Utrecht and beyond. Our students and alumni can be found on many stages throughout the city, but also in music schools, primary and secondary schools, and numerous social and cultural institutions. They are also entrepreneurs who enrich the city with many new initiatives. During our anniversary celebrations, we will showcase the wonderful talents of our students and alumni.

The following events are planned:

Opening concert on Friday 28 November

We kick off with an opening concert by HKU Large Ensemble under the musical direction of former Composer of the Netherlands Martin Fondse. The HKU Large Ensemble – with over 60 musicians – consists of wind instruments, strings, singers and a rhythm section from the Jazz & Pop and Classical Music departments. Two alumni will also be performing: saxophonist Kika Sprangers and vocalist Marit van der Lei.

Various anniversary concerts during project weeks

Every year in January and April, HKU Utrechts Conservatorium organises project weeks, during which students are given the opportunity to gain new experience in disciplines unfamiliar to them, outside the existing curriculum. In the 2025/2026 academic year, the project weeks will be dedicated to the 150th anniversary of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. More information about the programme will follow.

Closing event on Sunday 28 June

On the last Sunday of Exposure 2026, we will conclude the anniversary year with a spectacular closing event. A large orchestra of students, alumni and pupils from primary and secondary schools in Utrecht will march in a musical procession from Domplein to Mariaplaats. Upon arrival at Mariaplaats, the world premiere of a composition written by the famous Utrecht composer Louis Andriessen in 1970 for the city of Utrecht will take place: De Schat van Scharlaken Rackham (The Treasure of Scarlet Rackham). The carillon of the Dom Tower will accompany the entire event, both during the procession and the concert at Mariaplaats.

A brief historical overview

  • In 2011, HKU Utrecht Conservatory launched a new bachelor's programme: Musician 3.0, a programme that trains musicians regardless of genre or instrument.
