Fourth-year students from the Interactive Performance Design (IPD) programme have spent the first half of their graduation year working collaboratively with students from HKU Games on an assignment for an actual client from the professional field. This year there are two joint projects: one is with the Beyond the Black Box festival at Theater de Brakke Grond in Amsterdam, and one with the I Light U festival in Utrecht.

The students began their research in September, then pitched their concepts to the external partners and developed one of those ideas into the final work that they will present at the festivals.

Beyond the Black Box: De Zijden Steek ('The Silk Stitch')
Beyond the Black Box is an interdisciplinary festival that pushes the boundaries of traditional art forms. Works that do not fit neatly within the walls of the white cube (museums) or the black box (theatres) find their way into the ‘grey space’ at this annual festival, held at the Flemish cultural centre De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam. The pieces appeal to all the senses, resist classification into a single genre or discipline, and exist in dialogue with the audience.

Festival Beyond the Black Box is taking place from 12 through 15 Februay.

I Light U: Rooted
I Light U is an exhibition of light art by national and international artists displayed in the public space around Utrecht Central Station. The festival is held annually for three weeks in January, showcasing both existing and newly created works with the intention of connecting east and west Utrecht. The installations are placed on squares, buildings, passageways, tunnels and bridges around the station area, and visitors can follow approximately 2 km of route to admire the luminous artworks during the dark winter month.
The work by the HKU students can be seen on the Moreelsebrug bridge towards the station.

The I Light U Festival is taking place from 9 through 31 January.
