At the nearby locations of AG and Fotodok, fourth-year students from HKU Photography present 21 unique projects. These projects are snapshots of the process towards their graduation next June. Over the past period, they conducted research into ways of merging collection, experimentation, and providing meaning. Each student chose their own conceptual starting point, that they now show through an initial visual translation. The underlying themes touch on interpersonal (family) relationships as well as broader social and societal issues.
During the research phase, students often use the camera as a tool for exploration. In the visual development of their work, they push and expand the boundaries of the photographic medium, making use, among other things, of existing archival material. Genesis of Gestures offers a first impression of what engages these young makers and how their work relates to our rapidly changing world.
