HKU Exposure 2023

The HKU cohort of 22/23 is graduating and warmly welcomes you to admire their graduation works during Exposure 2023, from Wednesday 28 June to Sunday 2 July, at various HKU locations and other locations spread across the city.

Set out your route from Pastoe Fabriek to Oudenoord and stop along the way for the lighting art installation especially dedicated to Exposure at Mariaplaats. Board off in Wisselspoor and Merwede, new city quarters in development, and see how our graduate students are transforming the former office and warehouse buildings into art exhibition galleries. You can expect to see art in every kind of discipline, yet mostly somewhere in between. Art that stands out for its great artistic wealth, and because it shines a new light on the ever-changing world we live in.

700 graduation works in all disciplines

Exposure 2023 consists of about 700 graduation works from the 9 schools of HKU, on 8 locations, five days long. Fine art, design, music, theatre, games, photography, film, graphic design, illustration and much more: it’s all represented. Graduates are showing their works at the HKU locations Oudenoord, IBB-laan, Jaarbeursplein and the iconic Pastoe Fabriek: the former furniture factory along the Vaartse Rijn canal. Works can also be admired at the public locations in the city quarters of Wisselspoor and Merwede (Building M) and across various stage venues in the city, such as EKKO and BAK.

Even better than an audio tour

Unique about Exposure is that the graduating artists are present at their work, to explain the meaning and talk about it. You don’t even need an audio tour! This ensures that a visit to Exposure is more than just ‘taking a look’: you can dive into the thoughts, dreams and ambitions of the persons who form the newly arrived batch of Utrecht’s future artists.

Lighting art installation at Mariaplaats

Especially designed for Exposure by Marieke van der Burg, HKU alumnus and winner of a HKU Award 2022, in collaboration with the Utrecht-based video mapping collective LiGHT-UP, is the interactive lighting art installation at Mariaplaats. The walls of the monumental main building of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium, the former hospital from 1896, will form an interactive canvas after sunset during the five days of Exposure. Expect a huge search light, revealing a shadow play on the edge between night and day, between waking and dreaming, fact and fiction, with an animation of which you as the spectator can determine how it plays out.
