International Networks

HKU is part of several international networks. We collaborate with other institutes on promoting the interests of art universities and students. On this page, you can read about HKU’s international networks.

HKU collaborates with other institutes within international networks. The goal of these networks is to improve contact and consultation between similar institutes and/or professional fields. The networks promote a variety of interests at regional, national and international level. They also provide students and lecturers with exchange opportunities.
  • ELIA represents 330 higher arts education institutes from over 40 countries. ELIA represents art education to the European Commission and to networks on other continents (America, Australia, Africa and Asia). For example, the network facilitates international activities for artists, students, lecturers and managers, including projects, symposia, programmes and databases.

  • Paradox is a sub-network of ELIA. The network comprises institutes and people concerned with higher education in autonomous fine art in Europe. Paradox organises meetings and conferences.

    The goals of the organisation are:
    • To give information about the fine art education sector in Europe and to provide a network for it
    • To promote discussions and the exchange of knowledge
    • To represent institutes’ visions to ELIA
    • To discuss and consider the consequences of changes in fine art education in Europe
    • To document developments in fine art education in Europe

  • AEC is a European network of around 300 professional music institutions in 57 countries.

  • Cumulus International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media is a network of more than 100 members. The members organise a conference twice a year.

  • EARN is a European network for artistic research, founded in September 2004 during a symposium in Helsinki. The network was created there on the initiative of the MaHKU and the Helsinki School of Art.

  • The Association for Art Administration Educators is the oldest network organisation in the field of art administration. One of the main activities of the AAAE is establishing a standard that has to be met by MA programmes in the United States. The organisation aims to do the same for BA programmes as well. In addition, AAAE helps students to find international internships.

  • Cultural Art Administration Training Centres) is similar to the AAAE, but then at European level. HKU has been a member of the network since its foundation in Poland, in 1992. The network has 127 members (85 full members, 39 associate members and 3 individual members) in 38 countries. It organises regular conferences and training sessions, and has recently set up an internship support scheme.

  • Utrecht Network is a joint venture between 30 influential European universities, which strive towards the internationalisation of higher education.

  • MAUI is a network that focuses on mobility between member higher education institutes in the EU (Utrecht Network members) and the US. It enables students from the member universities to study at one of the other member institutes.
