Veerle Spronck

Veerle Spronck works at HKU as an associate professor, lecturer and researcher.

Veerle works as Associate Professor within the professorship Creative Practices and Entrepreneurship, where she studies how artistic research takes shape in collaborations between artists and other domains, and how such encounters open up new ways of knowing, working and caring. She is also project leader of the national platform Kunst ≈ Onderzoek (Art ≈ Research), which connects professorships, cultural institutions and policy actors to strengthen the position of artistic research in the Netherlands.

Building on her interdisciplinary background in art history, Science and Technology Studies, and artistic research, she works with research methods that follow and listen to the practices under study. At times this means writing and observing, but just as often drawing, curating, or collaborating on an exhibition or performance. In this way, her research is not only about transdisciplinary artistic practices but also operates from it.

Within the professorship, Veerle leads several research projects, including ON the LINE, CAR(E)TOGRAPHY and Teach Us How to Feel. Alongside her research, she teaches within HKU Creative Transformation, where she coordinates and co-developed the minor Creative Research for Change. She is also co-supervisor of two PhD candidates within Meaningful Artistic Research (MAR).

Veerle studied Art History at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and obtained her MSc and PhD in Science and Technology Studies and Artistic Research at Maastricht University and joined the professorship What Art Knows at the Maastricht Institute of Arts. In her dissertation, Listen Closely: Innovating Audience Participation in Symphonic Music, she examined how symphony orchestras experiment with audience roles in order to create new forms of artistic meaning.

Next to her work for HKU, Veerle is doing the (Dutch) podcast Kunstmatig (‘Artificial’) together with Rosa Wevers, discussing art and technology.
