Performing Working - PD

Performing Working is the first Professional Doctorate track at HKU. Researcher Philippine Hoegen wants her four-year research process to provide a better understanding of what ‘work’ is, and what it’s not. How to define, for example, the (invisible) work done by patients at a hospital? And why do we count certain activities as ‘work’, yet others not? Performing Working contributes to our understanding of the role work plays in our lives.

What is work exactly?

In this artistic research, the focus lies on questions such as: what is work exactly, and what is it not? How can we work without exhausting ourselves and our environment? Who are we when we work, or when we are instead excluded from employment? And what would happen if we started applying the term ‘work’ to activities that are usually not regarded as work, such as having an illness?

Next to gaining such new knowledge, another goal of this research is to develop new artistic methods. It is therefore a form of performative research, which also leads to new knowledge about artistic methods and how to conduct research.

Professional doctorate

Performing Working is one of HKU’s first Professional Doctorate track: a new professional education within higher-vocational education (HBO) that trains candidates to become highly qualified professionals who can intervene in complex challenges. A Professional Doctorate is equivalent to a university PhD, yet has another character and a different – internationally acknowledged – title: PD. While a PhD track at a university trains candidates to become professional researchers, the PD in HBO is a training for research professionals. The first cohort of candidates, in five different domains, started in 2023. Art + Creative is one of these domains, with Philippine Hoegen being the first candidate for HKU.
