Governance for Good

Recent societal developments require cultural organisations to be flexible, innovative and resilient. In addition, these organisations play an increasingly important role through their contribution to societal issues and transitions. This development calls for governance that is future-proof and safeguards the artistic identity of the cultural sector. This is the subject of the research project Governance for Good: future-proof and appropriate governance practices for cultural organisations.

Practical questions about the application of the code

Governance models and practices must fit the diversity of the cultural sector, as organisations vary in their working methods, forms and scale. The Dutch cultural sector has two governance models and a Governance Code Culture, which enjoys broad recognition and has an open character. Nevertheless, there are still practical questions about the application of the code, particularly among smaller organisations and organisations with different organisational forms. These questions concern, among other things, knowledge of alternative governance models, such as a one-tier board, the governance of multidisciplinary and cross-domain collaborations, and the changing roles and responsibilities of supervisory bodies and other stakeholders, such as advisory boards and community boards.

Six cases and new scenarios

This exploratory research project is a collaboration between HvA, HKU, Cultuur+Ondernemen, consultant Bér Engels and social designer Felice Pekelder. The research involves a study of six good governance practices: four international cases from the cultural sector and two Dutch cases from the technology and healthcare domains. Based on this new practical knowledge, alternative forms of governance and supervision are envisioned and tested using speculative design methods. The new scenarios complement the current governance models, governance practices and the governance code.

Research question and expected outcomes

The research question is: How can speculative design methods be used to make the governance practices of cultural organisations appropriate and future-proof? The results will provide new knowledge for future-proof governance and supervision in the cultural sector and for the role of creative professionals therein. They will also offer insights into speculative design methods for envisioning alternative scenarios. The intended outcomes include a publication, an inspiration booklet on governance and supervision for cultural organisations, and a poster on speculative scenario development for designers.
