HKU teacher Wiam Al-Zabari wins Golden Calf Award
A translated quote from the jury report: ‘in an intimate, raw and sometimes confrontational way, Wiam Al-Zabari investigates an incident that happened 20 years ago, and how this still strongly affects his family today. Feelings of sadness, guilt, and shame are exposed in the intimate conversations that Al-Zabari has with his father and young son, but also with himself. The playful and casual narrative style, that doesn’t shy away from self-criticism, ensures the movie never feels too loaded. The film My Father, Nour, and I, is also valuable for the broader society, because it explains how traumas can have an impact from generation to generation, and that discussing them might by painful and confrontational, yet also generates more understanding and closer ties.’
The documentary is in Dutch, but can be seen here.
