HKU is the largest arts university in the Netherlands. Our horizons extend much further than the creative industry alone. The link between art and society is what interests HKU.

HKU – the link between art and society

Under the motto ‘The art of HKU: new practices, new solutions’, we train talented students to develop innovative arts-based solutions for social challenges.

HKU students and graduates deploy their talents not only within the cultural sector or creative industry. They also apply their creative and artistic way of thinking and working to innovations in a wide variety of social areas. These may include healthcare, welfare, education or development cooperation.

HKU is extremely proud of its students and alumni. Their work receives special attention everywhere – at film festivals, in the Dutch media and in the game industry, and from publishers and healthcare institutions. Discover the talent of HKU students and alumni in the yearbook (in Dutch).

HKU as a research institute

HKU is also a leading research institute within the creative industry. In our five professorships, researchers and students develop new knowledge on the interface between art and its application in society. Our four expertise centres share new knowledge within the HKU schools and with professionals who want to develop further.
