Designing for regrowth – HKU works on regenerative design

A growing number of artists and creators are working with regenerative design: methods of designing that are aimed at recovery and regrowth, instead of exhausting the earth. This can contribute to a more inhabitable world. HKU is also strongly encouraging this methodology and attitude. A number of teachers are taking the lead in this with their education and research, in close cooperation with students.
Designing for regrowth – HKU works on regenerative design
On 10 April 2025, HKU was co-organiser of Compos(t)ing: a symposium about regenerative creative practices in Het Nieuwe Instituut, museum for architecture, design and digital culture in Rotterdam. This participative event for students, teachers and researchers was designed to explore the meaning and the reach of regenerative design.

HKU lecturing researcher Martijn van Gessel, Anke Jongejan and teacher Ruben Jacobs of the minor Arts & Ecology each organised a session at the symposium, and share their perspective on regenerative design in this video.
