With the festive opening of Home of the Artists (HOTA), Utrecht has gained a unique new place to live. Located in Leidsche Rijn, the new residential complex offers 250 homes for HKU students and young professionals starting out on the housing market. HOTA helps address one of the biggest challenges facing students today: finding suitable and affordable housing.

HOTA is the result of a collaboration between SSH, HKU, Cazas Wonen and the Municipality of Utrecht. The project brings together the expertise of all partners, ranging from student housing and property development to HKU's knowledge of what art students need to live, work and connect with one another.

The complex offers a variety of housing types, including live-work studios, self-contained studios, student rooms and one-bedroom apartments. It also provides plenty of space for collaboration and community, with a shared courtyard, a multifunctional meeting space, and studio and exhibition facilities. Residents are encouraged to programme these spaces themselves and organise activities for the community.

For HKU, HOTA is much more than a residential building. Affordable, suitable housing is essential for attracting talented students to Utrecht and providing them with an inspiring environment throughout their studies. By combining living, making and meeting, HOTA reflects the way many artists and designers work, collaborate and develop their practice.

Simon Van Damme, member of HKU's Executive Board, says: "Studio and exhibition space, together with suitable housing, are essential to attracting and retaining young creative talent in Utrecht. HOTA offers a unique and innovative added value for the city. HKU looks forward to being part of the exciting development of this neighbourhood."

With its 250 new homes, HOTA also contributes to Utrecht's ambition to increase the supply of affordable rental housing and accelerate the development of housing for students and young professionals.
