Keti Koti 2025

  • 01/07
On this morning, we reflect together on the history of slavery and its influence on our current makership – and our future. What traces of our colonial past are still (literally) visibly and noticeably present in our current society? And what does our colonial past mean for us today, as creators, for our thoughts and actions? And what actions can we take?

What to expect from this morning:

  • City tour: Traces of Slavery - In the heart of Utrecht, in front of the school yard of HKU Theatre at Janskerkhof, both hidden and visible stories are covering up a mostly ignored past. During this insightful city walk along those traces of slavery, you learn more about Utrecht and the role that this city played in colonial times.
  • In the Main Hall of HKU Theatre, Rosa Weekers (HKU teacher at Acting) provides a glimpse of her artistic works, that are inspired by colonial history.
  • Panel discussion: CREATE - in as though-provoking panel discussion, we talk with teachers and students from various HKU schools, and with members of the audience, in which CREATE will be the key word. What influences do decolonisation and anti-racist conduct have on our identity, vision and artistic practice? What do we need for dealing with this?
The morning ends with some time to talk and reflect, while enjoying the Surinamese cakes eksi kuku and bojo. In the afternoon, you can go at your own behest to the Keti Koti celebration in Griftpark.
