De klimaatcrisis is ook een crisis van het beeld en de verbeelding. Wetenschappelijke en journalistieke beelden alleen lijken geen gevoel van urgentie over te brengen. Dergelijke beelden kunnen te ingewikkeld of overweldigend zijn. We hebben meer artistieke verbeeldingskracht nodig, evenals praktische middelen om ecologische verbeeldingskracht buiten de kunsten te stimuleren.
Het artist-in-residence-programma Hydromedia: Seeing With Water stelt voor om conventionele visuele benaderingen van de opwarming van de aarde te omzeilen. We nodigen kunstenaars en experimentele fotografen uit om een voorstel in te dienen om innovatieve en hands-on tools te ontwikkelen tijdens een residentie van een maand in oktober 2023 aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) en in hun eigen studio in de maanden daarna. Je kunt een reeds bestaande praktijk voortzetten of voorstellen om nieuw werk te maken dat betrekking heeft op het thema.
Het leidende thema is water (in welke verschijningsvorm dan ook) en de residentie zal multidisciplinair zijn. Je verkent je favoriete invalshoek voor dit thema binnen lokale instellingen. Tijdens de residentie krijg je ook de mogelijkheid om samen te werken met (of geïnspireerd te raken door) het werk van wetenschappers en ecologen rond water en duurzaam waterbeheer.
We nodigen je uit om innovatieve manieren van kijken naar (of met) water te verkennen en te ontwikkelen door gebruik te maken van analoge en/of digitale middelen. Het creatieve proces moet worden gedocumenteerd en verwerkt tot een soort artistiek protocol, zodat het werk een breder publiek de middelen zal geven om hun relatie met de natuur opnieuw vorm te geven. Bovendien zet een dergelijke benadering aan tot nadenken over de omstandigheden van de gebruikte media, hoe een medium ons mede vormgeeft en hoe ook water als een medium kan worden beschouwd.
Het Hydromedia-programma bestaat uit drie residentie-periodes (vier geselecteerde kunstenaars per residentie): de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen (België) in april 2023, de Utrechtse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (HKU) in Utrecht (Nederland) in oktober 2023, en de Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe (Duitsland) in het voorjaar van 2024. Binnen enkele maanden na elke residentie zal in de buurt van de residentie-locatie een kleine tentoonstelling te zien zijn met de werken zoals ontwikkeld tijdens en kort na de werkperiode. In het najaar van 2024 wordt het werk van alle 12 deelnemers samen getoond in een gecureerde groepstentoonstelling in het Dresden Museum of Technology and Industry (Duitsland).
OPEN CALL residentie
Dit is de open call voor de tweede residentieperiode, aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU) in Utrecht (Nederland) in oktober 2023. De open call voor de derde residentieperiode, te houden aan de Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG ) in Karlsruhe (Duitsland) in het voorjaar van 2024, wordt binnenkort bekend gemaakt.
Per residentie locatie worden vier kunstenaars geselecteerd. Elke artiest ontvangt een honorarium van € 2000, een werkbudget van € 2000 en een reiskostenvergoeding. Ook wordt gezorgd voor huisvesting en levensonderhoud.
ONDERWERP EN TIJDLIJN VOOR DE RESIDENTIE IN UTRECHT
De stad Utrecht en haar wijdere omgeving, bijna gelegen in het geografische centrum van Nederland, liggen op ecologische grenslijnen, waaronder meerdere waterwegen en verschillende grondsoorten, van klei en veen tot de zandgronden van het meer heuvelachtige gebied verder naar het oosten. De stad zelf bevat kanalen, rivieren en enkele kleinere stroompjes, en natuurlijk de lichamen van haar menselijke en niet-menselijke inwoners voor wie water van levensbelang is. De afgelopen jaren hebben verschillende wetenschappelijke en crowdsourced studies echter uitgewezen dat de kwaliteit van het Nederlandse oppervlaktewater ondermaats is.
De residentie periode in Utrecht loopt van 2 oktober 2023 tot en met 31 oktober 2023. Na de residentieperiode krijgen de geselecteerde kunstenaars enige tijd om hun werk verder te ontwikkelen, dat vanaf januari of februari 2024 te zien zal zijn in een lokale tentoonstelling.
De deadline om je aan te melden voor de residentie aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht is vastgesteld op 18 juni 2023, 23:59 CET. Aanvragers krijgen binnen twee weken na de deadline bericht over de uitslag.
VOORWAARDEN VOOR DEELNAME
- Je bent een actieve beeldend kunstenaar die momenteel in Europa woont en werkt en/of de nationaliteit bezit van een van de landen van de Europese Unie. Reizen per trein of bus heeft de voorkeur.
- Je bent beschikbaar voor de gehele periode van de residentie en zet je in om het werk begin 2024 te presenteren op de lokale tentoonstelling.
- Je hebt een grondige praktische kennis van het Engels, zodat je tijdens het project met anderen kunt samenwerken.
- Je bent bereid om je werkmethoden te delen met het grote publiek (via de papieren publicaties die tijdens de tentoonstellingen worden gelanceerd) en het team te voorzien van representatieve documentatie voor de website van het project en sociale media gedurende de hele Hydromedia-tijdlijn.

SELECTIE PROCEDURE
De ingediende aanvraag wordt beoordeeld door een vakjury in opdracht van de projectpartners. Geselecteerde kunstenaars ontvangen in de week van 26 juni 2023 bericht van aanvaarding. De beslissing van de jury is definitief en staat niet ter discussie.
Geselecteerde kunstenaars ontvangen een vergoeding voor de reis, het verblijf en het verblijf tijdens de residentieperiode, ontvangen een artiestenvergoeding van € 2000 en een werkbudget van € 2000 voor de productie van hun werk(en).
Van deelnemers wordt verwacht dat zij:
- aanwezig zijn bij en actief samenwerken tijdens de onderzoeksresidentie
- beschikbaar voor online vergaderingen na de residentie voor feedback en opvolging van het onderhanden werk
- houd een visueel dagboek bij van hun proces
- hun werkwijze beschrijven en delen met het grote publiek
- het project promoten via hun websites en profielen op sociale media

The unfolding climate crisis is also a crisis of the image and the imagination. Scientific and journalistic imagery alone doesn’t seem to communicate a sense of urgency. Such imagery can be either too complicated or overwhelming. We need more artistic imagination as well as practical means to stimulate ecological imagination beyond the arts.
The artist-in-residence program Hydromedia: Seeing With Water proposes to sidestep conventional visual approaches to global warming. We invite artists and experimental photographers to submit a proposal to develop innovative and hands-on tools during a one-month residency in October 2023 at the Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU) and in their own studio in the months thereafter. You may extend an already existing practice or propose to make new work pertaining to the theme.
The guiding theme is water (in whatever manifestation you prefer) and the residency will be multidisciplinary. You explore your preferred angle to this theme within local settings. During the residency you will also be offered the possibility to collaborate with (or get inspired by) the work of scientists and ecologists around water and sustainable water management.
We invite you to explore and develop innovative ways of looking at (or with) water by using analog and/or digital means. The creative process must be documented and processed into a type of artistic protocol, so the work will give a wider audience the tools to reimagine their relationship to nature. Furthermore, such an approach stimulates reflection on the conditions of the employed media, how a medium co-shapes us and how water could be considered a medium, too.
The Hydromedia program consists of three residency periods (four selected artists per residency): The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp (Belgium) in April 2023, the Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU) in Utrecht (The Netherlands) in October 2023, and the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe (Germany) in the spring of 2024. Within a few months after each residency there will be a small exhibition in the vicinity of the residency location showing the works as developed during and shortly after the working period. In the fall of 2024 the work of all 12 participants will be shown together in a curated group show at the Dresden Museum of Technology and Industry (Germany).
This is the open call for the second residency period, at the Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU) in Utrecht (The Netherlands) in October 2023. The open call for the third residency period, to be held at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Karlsruhe (Germany) in the spring of 2024, will be announced soon.
Four artists will be selected per residency location. Each artist receives a € 2000 fee, a € 2000 working budget, as well as reimbursement of travel costs. Accommodation and subsistence will also be provided for.
TOPIC & TIMELINE OF THE RESIDENCY IN UTRECHT
Residency period 2: The city of Utrecht and surroundings
The city of Utrecht and its wider surroundings, nearly located in the geographical center of the Netherlands, are located on ecological borderlines, including multiple waterways and various soil types, from clay and peat to the sandy grounds of the more hilly area further east. The city itself contains canals, rivers and some smaller streams, and of course the bodies of its human and non-human inhabitants for whom water is vitally important. In recent years, several scientific and crowd-sourced studies have pointed out, however, that the quality of the Dutch surface waters is sub-standard.
The residency period in Utrecht runs from 2 October 2023 through 31 October 2023.
After the residency period the selected artists will have some time to further develop their work, which will be shown in a local exhibition starting in January or February 2024.
The deadline to apply for the residency at the Utrecht University of the Arts is set for 18 June 2023, 23:59 CET. Applicants will be notified about the results within two weeks after the deadline.
CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
—You are an active visual artist currently living and working in Europe and/or possess the nationality of one of the countries in the European Union. Traveling by train or bus is preferred.
—You are available for the entire period of the residency and committed to presenting the work at the local exhibition in early 2024.
—You have a thorough working knowledge of English so you can collaborate with others during the project.
—You are willing to share your working methods with the general public (via the paper publications that will be launched during the exhibitions) and provide the team with representative documentation for the project’s website and social media throughout the Hydromedia timeline.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
The application submitted will be judged by a professional jury working for the project partners. Selected artists will receive notification of acceptance in the week of 26 June 2023. The decision of the jury is final and cannot be discussed.
SELECTED ARTISTS receive remuneration for the travel, accommodation and subsistence during the residency period, receive an artist’s fee of € 2000 as well as a working budget of € 2000 for the production of their work(s).
Participants are expected to:
—be present at and collaborate actively during the research residency
—available for online meetings after the residency for feedback and follow up of the work in progress
—keep a visual diary of their process
—describe their working method and share it with the general public
—promote the project via their websites and social media profiles
—participate in the local exhibition and the final group exhibition in Dresden
—fulfill requirements concerning financial reporting
