As a student, you are expected to have an independent attitude and working method, which will continually be tested on a clear and well-founded vision of the future. You will describe this vision of the future – your own focus on and vision of your future professional practice – in a study plan.
The study programme consists of individual lessons, group lessons, ensemble coaching and subjects in preparation for the profession. In the research project, you will focus on a specific subject, either individually or in cooperation with other students. You will choose your own supervisor or coach for this.
During the first month of the course, you will write a study plan, in which you outline your future prospects and study goals. In order to stimulate and support your individual and artistic development, and your communication skills, we provide individual coaching based on the study plan, and tutor supervision in the area of general study progress.
We aim to give you as many opportunities as possible to gain experience in all sorts of areas of professional practice. This will be done mainly outside the conservatoroire, in the form of various external and internal projects within the Master’s programme.
In the research project, you will focus on a subject that is relevant to your future professional practice. You will show the results and conclusions of your research in a final product (thesis, CD or DVD) and presentation (lecture, lecture-recital or workshop). In the internship, you will gain experience in professional practice and you will receive coaching from an external supervisor.
As a student of Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU), you will also be encouraged to set up interdisciplinary projects and to create cross-overs. As there are so many different arts disciplines present within the HKU, you will be right at the heart of interdisciplinary activity.
In order to give you the best possible preparation for the versatile and demanding music profession, the programme also includes:
• theoretical, historical and philosophical backgrounds
• training in business and organisational skills
• coaching
• masterclasses and clinics
• training in stage presentation (within the Performance pathway)
• Music, Mind & Body (within the Performance pathway)
Students applying for Conducting, Carillon or Church Music courses may be advised on the basis of their entrance exam to take a pre-masters course of 30 ECTS before beginning the masters course. The pre-masters lasts for a maximum of one study year and is a form of contract education.
On completion of your studies, you are awarded the degree Master of Music. You can put the abbreviation MMus after your name.
