The Faculty of Visual Arts and Design focuses on research, experiment and the artistic, conceptual development of the student. The faculty also gives plenty of attention to professional practice.
For example, besides being teachers, all the practical teachers are also visual artists, designers, technologists or exhibition makers, so they are well informed about current developments in the professional field. Around 200 teachers and guest lecturers work at this faculty.
The faculty maintains contact with professional organisations in the fields of free and applied arts and with businesses and organisations in the professional field. Teachers and guest lecturers also come from abroad, and excursions and exhibitions are organised abroad as well. The number of foreign students who come to study at the HKU for shorter or longer periods is also on the increase.
Student work places
Within the faculty, the education has a strong individual focus. From the second year on, you will get your own work place. This work place helps promote good individual guidance. The bachelor course in Fine Art (BFA), moreover, provides third-year students with a shared work space, and fourth-year students have their own as far as possible.
Work places and studios
Besides work places, the faculty has professionally equipped workshops, where you can work independently under the supervision of a workshop assistant.
Academy Gallery
The faculty has its own gallery in the city centre, where the work of students, ex-students and teachers is exhibited.
