The strategy adopted within the faculty regarding teaching and learning is based on the point of view that you and your individual learning process are at the centre of education. A strong emphasis is placed on your self-motivation, independence, curiosity, creativity and pro-activity. The educational strategy offers room for you to learn based on what you already know or are able to do, and to focus on what needs to be improved. You participate actively in the quality of your education, not only by directing to a great extent the knowledge and skills you learn, but also by reflecting on your learning process.
To confront you with the implications of your future role as art manager you will work as an art manager in a professional / authentic setting. The exact professional / authentic setting depends on the area of expertise on which you would like to focus.
For students interested in the areas of creation and production, Utrecht School of the Arts offers art education in almost every art discipline. Learning in an authentic environment has proven to be very successful and profitable for students.
Students whose study profile focuses on distribution and consumption need a different environment. For those students we look for companies or institutes outside of the Utrecht School of the Arts where they can work in project teams as a (junior) project manager. For a student interested in distribution this will mean more focus on a role of an art manager in distribution. For a student interested in theatre management facilitation productions it will mean working with a production bureau. A student interested in marketing art will be connected to a company representing artists to market their work.
The MA AM programme distinguishes itself with it’s practice based, student centred study approach. The structure and organisation of MA AM have been developed in careful harmony with the bachelor’s degree programme of Art and Economics.
The programme is based on four pillars:
1. Close connection with professional practice
2. Personal study profile
3. Practice-based research
4. International focus
