The exchange period for Photography is in the first semester (autumn semester) of the second year. In this period a maximum of two exchange students can participate in classes that cover a range of subjects; technical training, research on image editing, documentary photography, multimedia training, presentation and art & cultural history (in an international class). The emphasis in this period is discovering your own way of telling a story and researching the way images can have different meanings by the way you use them.
Documentary Photography (FDO)
Technical Training (FVA)
Multimedia (MM)
General Artistic Training (ABO)
Image research (RE)
Art & Cultural History (CTS)
Please note: since most courses will be taught in Dutch, non-Dutch speakers can only participate in a limited number of courses.
Key elements of the Photography exchange programme in Utrecht are:
• You join a group of Dutch fellow students.
• You take classes for a period of at least 15 weeks (i.e. half a course year).
• Some classes run for 7 or 8 weeks, others for 15 weeks.
• In week 16, all students present their 'exhibition'.
• A good mix of group and individual work is provided.
• Lecturers often run their own design agency or practise as an artist besides working as a teacher. This allows them to include aspects of ’real life’ in their assignments.
• Classes are in Dutch. In classes taught on a more individual basis lecturers will always be prepared to provide extra explanation in English. Fellow students will also be willing to help you translate.
• As classes are in Dutch it is virtually impossible to gain the full 30 credits during your stay with us. We therefore strongly advise you to consult your own university or school in advance on ways to compensate for any missing credits.
• On arrival we allow foreign students to familiarize themselves with the subjects on offer by attending as many classes as possible. After the initial week, the department's tutor helps you select a suitable combination of course modules. The amount of credits that may be obtained during the exchange period will therefore only become clear after the first week.
Further elaboration on the information above can be obtained by sending your specific questions to the Student Service Centre.
