The Kurt Thomas Cursus distinguishes various levels. Each group will form its own choir within the given level. Levels C and D are open to non-Dutch speaking participants.
• Level C will work with choir, soloist(s) and a small instrumental ensemble and is meant for the professional / conservatoire student choral conducting / advanced amateur conductor with a good sound imagination of reasonably difficult scores who is an experience choir singer.
• Level D will work with chamber choir and the Evening Choir (consisting of all participants) and is meant for the very advanced professional/ conservatoire student choral conducting, with a good command of conducting technique, a clear sound imagination of difficult scores, who is an experienced choir singer.
Please note: participants in group D will this year have a choice of:
a. conducting turns in all lessons for D
b. conducting turns with the chamber choir alone
c. conducting turns with the Evening Choir alone
Should you choose for b or c, you will attend all lessons for D but will only treat the repertoire for either chamber choir or evening choir. You are required to have the complete repertoire for D at your disposal.
Per level a temporary repertoire list will be issued.
All levels
All participants will sing in the Evening Choir, conducted by participants from Group D, the following repertoire:
• Gloria - John Rutter (a.o. large choir, brass, percussion)
• De Noordewind - Gerard Beljon
This work was commissioned by the Kurt Thomas Cursus in cooperation with Kunstfactor for this year's edition of the Kurt Thomas Cursus. The lyrics are by Frederik van Eeden.
• Each day will start with reveille at 9 a.m. with all groups together. Possible components: warming up, Gregorian chant, vocalization, conducting technique.
• Then there are lessons per group with turns conducting for the participants.
• Also, time will have been reserved to study individually or in groups.
• Each evening, all participants will sing in the Evening Choir, conducted by group D conductors.
• The course day will end at 8.30 p.m. and then it is time for talking things over in an outdoor café, for preparing your repertoire, for going home, or for staying over in Utrecht.
The Kurt Thomas Cursus will be rounded off on Saturday evening, July 14th, with a festive final concert in which many participants will mount the dais. Do point this date out to your friends and family...!
Kurt Thomas (1904-1973) was a German composer, conductor and educator. In 1965, he was requested to direct the first cours in Scheveningen. Many more years followed. As of 1995, the course took place in Utrecht, under the colours of SNK/Unisono. In 2009, the course was organized in Middelburg. Ever since 1965, hundreds of conductors – amateurs and professionals - participated in the Kurt Thomas Cursus.
As of 2011 the course will be back in Utrecht, under the umbrella of Utrechts Conservatorium. Utrechts Conservatorium will take care of the organization, thus preserving an important training for choral conductors. The unique concept of this course will remain intact: with its level groups and the intense collaboration between experienced teachers, the Kurt Thomas will again – in its 46th edition – mean a major boost to our rich (inter-)national choral life.
You will take care of accommodation yourself. The course organization may be of assistance in this. The city of Utrecht has one single camp site, in the vicinity more camp sites may be found. Naturally, Utrecht has many hotels. Often, participants from Utrecht can provide sleeping accommodation for fellow-participants.
