Graphic design is a profession where communication and social commitment come together. In this department you will learn as critical viewer to communicate visually in various ways. Through research and conceptual thinking you will learn to visualise information as effectively as possible, and you will learn to transfer this information by means of books, posters, websites, etc. For this, you not only need a knowledge of visual means of communication and visual language, but also insight into the context in which they function. The designer as author is an important starting point.
The BDes Illustration course focuses on visual communication. Illustrators convey their message using images. This is not the same as ‘making pretty pictures’. You develop your own image on the basis of texts and assignments. You make images for magazines, children’s books, educational CD-roms and computer games, for example.
As a product designer, you design functional and user-friendly products. These products are then developed so that they can be industrially manufactured. Depending on the product, you work together with marketers, ergonomists, scientists, technicians and/or stylists.
The BDes Photography course prepares you for a career as an independent photographer, with the emphasis on documentary photography. Documentary photographers always focus on social life, with the intention being to tell the story in images. The emphasis of the course is on the development of a professional attitude. You are trained to work as an independent operator, creating your own assignments or working on assignment. You become a sort of author, but using photographic images. You want to say things with your work, and are able to do so.

But you could also work in visual theatre, for example, television and film, advertising, exhibitions or events.
