As a 3D Designer, you are somewhere between the visual artist and the industrial designer. You make utilitarian products on the basis of your own vision. You often create your products under your own control and in small quantities. The strength of the field lies in the experimental and idiosyncratic nature of the work. Your products demonstrate your own 'handwriting' and the visual function of your product can be just as important as its utilitarian function.
You receive instruction in a wide range of animation techniques, ranging from classical to digital 2D and 3D computer animation. You become very familiar with the animation production process and learn to develop ideas for applied and free animations and gradually acquire in-depth knowledge of all aspects of animation, from story structure to sound production. You also learn how to choose the techniques to which you are best suited and the context which is most suited to your animation work.
Within the BDes Audiovisual Media course, you learn to develop your ideas for various video genres. You learn to work in a wide variety of production situations: camera, sound, editing, production, script, direction. You gain insight into the total audiovisual production process and you acquire skills and techniques needed for the various production phases (concept, research, script, production, technical realisation and post-production). You learn how to work with digital recording and editing equipment and gain a great deal of experience in preparing and realising video projects.
On the BDes Fashion Design course, you learn not only to design fashion, materials and patterns, but also to bring your product on the market. For example, by creating presentation books, labels and working drawings for the industry.
Graphic design is a profession where communication and social commitment come together. In this department you will learn as critical viewer to communicate visually in various ways. Through research and conceptual thinking you will learn to visualise information as effectively as possible, and you will learn to transfer this information by means of books, posters, websites, etc. For this, you not only need a knowledge of visual means of communication and visual language, but also insight into the context in which they function. The designer as author is an important starting point.
As a media designer, you learn to work within the framework of a production assignment with the elements of programme content, design, image technology and communication. You create a unified whole from these elements in short, appealing visuals and websites. You create productions in the applied area of television and commerce (leaders, bumpers, trailers, animations, corporate identity) and in the more autonomous field (VJ productions, installations, presentations). You are also able to create media productions which use a number of platforms, and you learn to apply combinations of techniques. You are driven in the areas of editing and special effects.
The BDes Illustration course focuses on visual communication. Illustrators convey their message using images. This is not the same as ‘making pretty pictures’. You develop your own image on the basis of texts and assignments. You make images for magazines, children’s books, educational CD-roms and computer games, for example.
On the Bachelor of Design (BDes) in Interior Architecture, you learn both to integrate architecture and interior in a new situation and to design an interior for an existing situation. You will not learn how to redesign a house using furniture and colours, as one often sees on television. What you do learn is to translate the demands made of a space into good design solutions.
As an industrial designer, you design functional and user-friendly products. These products are then developed so that they can be industrially manufactured. Depending on the product, you work together with marketers, ergonomists, scientists, technicians and/or stylists.
The BDes Photography course prepares you for a career as an independent photographer, with the emphasis on documentary photography. Documentary photographers always focus on social life, with the intention being to tell the story in images. The emphasis of the course is on the development of a professional attitude. You are trained to work as an independent operator, creating your own assignments or working on assignment. You become a sort of author, but using photographic images. You want to say things with your work, and are able to do so.
The BDes Theatre Design course trains students to become theatre designers. As a theatre designer, you are responsible for the design of all visible elements of a performance, such as decors, light and costumes. As the field of theatre design is so broad, there are many directions you could go in after graduation: drama, dance, mime or music theatre. But you could also work in visual theatre, for example, television and film, advertising, exhibitions or events.
The integration of urban development, architecture and the urban interior is the challenge in the BDes Urban Design course. As an urban designer, you create designs for public spaces, such as squares, streets, parks, cemeteries and school playgrounds. You will have knowledge of planning, architecture and urban development. Because you have a broad education, you will have a good overview and will be able to work together well with others involved in the design of public spaces.
