The theoretical part of the entrance examination comprises a number of written questions on general music theory and an aural test. Both parts take roughly a quarter of an hour.
The following areas are included:
• good knowledge of the fundaments of music theory
• scales
• harmony
• music theory
• building up, singing and recognising scales, two and three-part chords
• singing a simply melody in the key of G or F, also by the names of the notes
• dictation of a simple melodic fragment
• tapping a rhythm
Specific entrance requirements are outlined per instrument/main subject (below).
In general, it's important to demonstrate that you have rhythmic, harmonic and melodic insight. The committee may interrupt you halfway through if it feels you have already provided the necessary information. It is therefore advisable to come to the point as quickly as possible, avoiding numerous long solos by fellow players and any unnecessary repetition.
The committee may also ask you to:
• play or sing along with an unknown, simple piece by ear, without receiving any direction (rudiments of music and insight)
• play or sing a short written line (reading)
• play or sing a line you choose yourself based on a given tempo (click track)
